These tournament reports were recalled from experiences at the games. There hasn't been much updating to this section as tournaments are not being held here in Singapore for as far as I know cept for some small scale tournies by the local arcade vendors. But they usually play versus on SNK games. Seems like there's a lack of Capcom support here in Singapore. NEway, the purpose of this section is to allow other new tournament players have a chance to get a feel of what awaits them at an official tournament where games are reset after each round and everything goes... the aim is juz simply to win. :)

The postings on the tourney page are copyrighted to their respective owners so please do not take them and chuck them on your site without autorization from the original owners. So far only two tournaments have been posted here. I would appreciate it very much if players would take a bit of time to recall events and fights during the tournies and email them to me for posting.

Capcom Carnival SF3 Tournament 1997|East Coast Championship SF Tournament 1998

Capcom Carnival 1997 (Singapore)
Posted by: Airick

Arrived half an hour earlier than my play slot (2:30pm) and wondered if DarkLancer was around. Lots of people at the machines already. Tried to get a good look at the players but was too crowded. So I walked around the exhibitions instead. Lots of cool stuff! Wanted to get the Second Impact T-Shirts but didn't bring enuff cash... :( This was my first time playing in a tournament and I was like panicking more than NEone could! To make things worse, there were so many people watching! Would be embarassing to lose...

Time to play SF3! Walked back to the machines and waited for my name to be called. They called me and I went in. Saw my friend who I hadn't kept in contact for quite sometime. He was in the same time slot as me and I played a friendly with him. Uses Sean. Nothing great. Lost to my Ibuki.

Everyone's opponent had arrived and they all started playing. Mine hasn't arrived, someone named Dennis Tan. After 10 mins he arrived and we started to play. He apologized for being late. Ken player... same as me but he chose Shinryuken. Deciding to play safe, I picked Art3 (Hurricane Kicks). Played thru the first match and then the second. Pretty easy victory. :)

Advanced to play with a female gamer. Grace or something. She used Ibuki. Pretty good. Knowing that she'll jump often, picked Shinryuken. Lost the first but maintained my Ken and won the next two. She wasn't very good in parrying but had good timing and comboing. Loves to Jump MK, Standing LK, Standing MK, Hien or Raida. Sometimes even chaining into Super Arts. Damaging!

Next player was a Ryu guy. Don't remember his name or whatever. Defensive! So I keep throwing fireballs and he keep parrying and Fireballing back. I picked Ken Super Art3 again. Caught him offguard quite a few times when he fireballed at me too close. Boring game but won NEway.

Faced another Ken player in the next match. Don't remember much except that the player was pretty good. Almost knocked me out of the game! Good parrier if I can say so myself but he was not too good with blocking overheads so I gave him plenty of overheads and at the same time crouching attacks to confuse him. Won first and third match. Phew!

Last match for the day... if I win this one and I'll come back for the semis next day. Faced my first Yun/Yang opponent. He was using Yun and Art1 I think. (The one that kicks U way into the sky!) First match, he won. I didn't realise when he was going to land behind me everytime he dived (Dwn+MK) in. I would say he was a pretty normal Yun player but I was juz not good enuff! :) Second match... Got his rhythem! Kicked him out of the air countless times. Won with a super finish! Final round... both were down to very little life. He was going to win by time if I didn't attack. So tried my luck and fireballed him followed by a super... didn't get him. Killed me. No loser bracket in this tourney so I was out for good. :(

Didn't come back to watch the tourney the next day but someone (the tourney champ) won the free trip to Japan to face their number one SF player. Don't know the outcome of that match but I'm sure it was really good! ;) Lastly, hope that Capcom could come and organise more tournaments! Especially for both SF games, Z2A and ST! Airick, out.

ECC Street Fighter Tourney (Newark)
Posted by: Derek (Omni)

Flew from Indy to Detroit, had a hella long layover and flew to Newark. As soon as i get there, I didn't see Jef (crowbait), David Sirlin nor John Choi. So i start looking around everywhere for them to no avail. Finally after about 20 minutes later, they show up. Turns out they drove straight from MIT to the Newark airport and got lost. No big deal. Scott Bradburn was with them also who I had never met.

Met up with gunter and Joe (who helped run the tournament) at a dinner, ate and went back to Jef's, had "FUN ON THE GUN" until way too early in the morning and went to sleep.

Got up, showered, went to the arcade, signed up for the tournies, had some food, which wasn't that great, and went back to the arcade. No matter where I turned there were like 15 people playing every game. Sigh, so I decided ST was the main reason why I was there, so I headed in that direction. I'm playing like my first game of ST when I'm called for the A2 tourney.

Why I even bothered to enter the A2 tournament, I have no idea. I had no business playing that game. Let's just say I died really bad to a Rose player. I think I may have even heard the word 'perfect' or something like that as I walked away from the machine. I didn't care either

Went back to playing ST. Someone told me Ultima was there. And after I found out he really was there, I sought him out. I played Balrog versus his Vega and he walked away mumbling something about, "I am just getting outprioritized on my moves...". I won't say he sucked, he at least knew something about the game, but ST wasn't his game.

I think somewhere around now I got called to play A2 again. Again, no business playing that game. I could easily pass the written portion of the A2 test. Hell, I could even write the written portion, but I sure can't play that game! A2 tourney highlights... let's see... Didn't really watch much of it to be honest. Just watched David and John play each other. No comment. David won with Zangief.

Second Impact tournament time. Hmm... About a billion Akuma players. Some people couldn't even pick akuma and had others do it for them. Sad. Dive kick madness. You can see where this one is going folks. Choi got beaten, Kris got beaten, Omar got beaten, Sirlin got beaten and a kid named Eddie Lee from Chinatown, NYC placed first. A good turtle Ibuki. He didn't do anything imaginative or creative. Just effective. Everyone came to the conclusion that Ric Collins was by far the best Second Impact player there. Unfortunately he played Sean instead of Ibuki or Akuma thus he lost too.

By now it's like 2 in the morning. Hell, I don't think we even stayed for the Second Impact finals now that I think about it. Just went back to Jef's house and had "FUN ON THE GUN" again!!!

Next day, same thing. Get up, shower, arrive at the arcade late (left the ST board at Jef's house), sign up for the tournament(s) and go get some stuff to eat. Found out what Dim Sum (sp?) is and have vowed to never eat that over f***ing priced food again.

This time they decide to run both tournaments at once. Unfortunately, only one MvsC machine. Sigh. Enter the ST tournament and waited. My first match was against Lavar (friends with Kris and Omar) and he played old Ryu. I didn't know what to do. So I played Balrog. I think I beat him 2 straights. I was more nervous in this matchup then any other cause it was my first match and I knew he was good.

Second matchup was against Ryan Voll (sp? I know i'm butchering it) a local player to that arcade that wins all the tournies there i guess. I knew he played old Sagat so I played Bison the first game. Lost that one. I didn't know what to do, so I played Balrog. Lost that one too. So I'm in the loser's bracket now. Next matchup, against Joel Frank. I picked Ryu cause I thought he would play old Sagat against me. Nope, he picks old Guile. He wins the first then I pick Balrog to win the 2nd. It came down to the last round, and he won.

Definitely a good match, and afterwards me and Joel went to the side and discussed it. A super nice guy and a good player. :)

So by this time I'm already out of the tournament. ST highlights... The matchup of Omar against this local player named Pete Tally was really funny. For some reason, Pete didn't know that with Bison all you have to do is stick out random standing forwards and standing roundhouses to keep opponents at bay. Instead, he jumped straight up with forward. I think he was trying to keep Zangief out. Didn't work. Omar won. Omar's next match with Apoc was really good too! Came down to the wire and Omar did a super fireball against a poking low strong of Vega's and killed him. The finals were Omar and John Choi. John won.

I know John and Jef entered the MvsC tourney. Didn't watch any other matches except theirs. Eddie Lee from Chinatown won MvsC also. A turtle Gambit and Wolverine player if I didn't remember wrongly. (Gambit and War Machine maybe?)

After the tourney, hung out with Zeruel waiting for Psi (Alex K, Michael Monroe, or whatever you want to call him this week) as he owes everyone a video tape for something or other. Went to go food (I ended up getting sick from it) in his hotel room -- got our tapes and went back to Jef's house for FUN ON THE GUN!!! I was way sick and just went to bed. Choi, Sirlin, and Scott Bradburn went back to MIT. So Jef, Gunter, Zeruel and Joe were the only ones having FUN ON THE GUN!!!

Woke up to a thunderstorm, packed up, and came back to Indy. Can't look forward to seeing everyone again coz Chicago is going to be so lame this year, just me and Seth.

P.S. Thanks to everyone, especially Jef Pearlman for housing and driving me, John Choi, David Sirlin, David Dial, Scott Bradburn, Todd Dwyer (Zeruel) -- who ran a great tournament! And to Joe, Omar, Kris, Paul, Gary, Lavar, Joel Frank, Sam Kim, Tony Lim, and everyone else i talked to.
